Billy,
Interesting....you are the first guy I have heard about who is using an Alembic preamp.
The best preamp I have ever used is one that is no longer made. It was made in the 70's by Charlie Wick of ProCo Sound. He was a genius at anything to do with live sound, was a keyboard player, and has built a very sucessfull company around the live sound industry. He built keyboard rigs for some very famous people in his days..Yes and Jethro Tull to name a few. It is very similar to the Speakeasy preamp (that I have and love) in design and quailty with the additional feature of being able to daisy chain the two channels together to get a very gritty sound that's not really just distorted, but, well very hard to describe. Just very full and fat... with a ton of that Leslie tube amp.... overdriven to the max.... type of grit but with any volume you want. I jammed with an old friend a few months back who had one of the "blue face" ProCo Sound preamps in his stash of stuff. It was an awesome unit! Of course he would not part with the preamp even after I offered a grand for the bad boy!
In talking to Charlie to see if he had any of those old units lying around that he was willing to sell (which of course he did not) and he mentioned that the Alembic units were a good alternative to his old preamps.
Although I very happy with my SpeakEasy I have been curious how the Alembic unit sounded.
I have Charlie's permission to take apart my buddy's unit to build one of his for myself as long as I promise not to build and sell them and I can't wait to get to that project!
So does your Alembic unit just add that warm tube sound to your clone or does it also allow you to dial in a lot of grit and distortion?

Hello Clonies.
I am using a Bass Pre amp. The Alembic F1-X into my Pro-3. I purchased it used for my old P bass, tried it with the XB-2 into my old M/S pro-3 and it's still in the keyboard system. I run the F1-X at about 3/4 and the M/S at around 1/4. I push this through a pair of Barbetta Sona 32 c's.

Now you're getting personal. My first amp was a Sears Silvertone. We have
a couple nationally recognized guitar boutiques here, and I was shocked to
find an old tube Silvertone head being offered for $550. Apparently it has
a recognized "tone" that is valuable to somebody. No accounting for taste,
but I'm sure I paid around $95 for my Silvertone back in the day.

My only beef with Behringer is the hollow pre-amps in their Eurodesk mixers.
Not acceptable for recording in my opinion. There isn't much of a "brand"
level of quality among the various product lines. Behringer works OK in
certain applications. Low quality components do make a difference in
critical parts of the signal chain.
