Subject:Re: xk-3 keyboard
Not trying to start a flame war, I am passing on what I have observed
over the years. I work major shows and concerts, many "newbies" and lots
of old guys- like Boston, Journey, Michael McDonald, Tom Petty,
Jefferson Starship, Yes, etc. Maybe the "old dog/new tricks why change
something that works" keeps them loyal to Hammond, maybe they recognize
the road worthiness, maybe they fear change and are suspicious of new
keyboards, I don't know. Jonathan Caine runs his CK-3 into a Model 122
Leslie. Tom Brislin ran his CX-3 into a Motion Sound set up off stage
but ran in-ear for all his keyboards. Some run B3s on stage with the
Leslies next to them, others with the Leslies off stage- Tom Scholz
never took his Leslie out of the truck, he mic'd it through doors in the
road case! I own a B3, a CX-3, and a bunch of Kurzweil synths. I parked
the B3 and Leslie in my studio and use the CX-3 in my live rig. I use
the built in sim, not a rotating speaker. I also use in-ear monitors.
I think application has a great deal to do with the keyboard as well. If
you are only occasionally organ chording as an adjunct to piano behind a
singer and don't get to "step out" much, you may not need an actual
organ/speaker system. If you are featured as an organist, you need the
versatility of a Hammond or clone with drawbars and a decent sim/Leslie.
You need waterfall keys, not piano or synth keys. The size of the
venue/stage can affect your choices as well. Smallest stage I've played
on in the past five years is 22' x 24'.
I'm preaching to the choir, aren't I? I'll shut up now.
Too much coffee, sorry.
