Subject:Re: Clone-->Speakeasy examples

I agree that trying to get "the Speakeasy Effect" on tape (or whatever
it is we record on these days!) would be difficult. Even the
clonewheel comparisons occasionally posted here are controversial. In
the case of the speakeasy, the variations possible in source material
(clone) and the rest of the signal chain (amp, amp model or leslie)
are manifold. That said, the very nature of an A/B test is that you
are looking for a difference in an otherwise identical setup. The
listener knows his or her playback rig and can filter it out the
'common mode' signal to hear the differences. I thought the series of
clone comparisons using 'identical' settings, and a common midifile to
play it was pretty sucessful and telling. Of course everyone to the
man had a different opinion of the results, but thats cool. I also
think Peter Hayes's dyno preamp A/B files were pretty sucessful, but
that is a far less subtle effect than a stereo clone preamp. Unless
one is using the preamp to drive a leslie (in which case it has a
certain intrinsic utility (ie getting a weak clone up to level,
providing a 6 or 12 pin conversion and speed switching)) the effect is
pretty subtle, and except for the very necessary "taming of the
shrill" clone uses, it is definately a last 10% kind of thing. I can
definately tell the difference when I have my Stero Clone in chain,
but the Electro can sound pretty damn good alone through a SRM450, so
my 'lite rig' is fine, too.
