Also be sure to check out Hugh Banton from Van der Graff Generator, Mark
Stein from Vanilla Fudge, and Peter Robinson from Quatermass...

Missing In Action:
Brother Jack McDuff (Moonrappin is good as is Down Home Style)
Joe Krown (Funk Yard is a winner)
Billy Preston (I'm sure there are lots more, but I REALLY love his B3 work
on Eric Clapton's "One More Car, One More Rider")
Eddie Jobson (prog rock, but fantastic live Hammond playing: U.K.'s Night
After Night)
Soulive (B3 acid jazz)
Art Neville (check out anything by the Meters, or the Neville Bros "Live
on Planet Earth" or even the new one Walkin in the Shadow of Life)
Jon Lord (anything by Deep Purple, but especially "Machine Head" or "Made
in Japan" or another great one is "Archive Alive" with LOTS of Jon Lord's
unaccompanied improv)
Benmont Tench (Tom Petty's keyboard player is a master of B3
accompaniment; while using a very deceptive lack of flash, he actually is a
craftsman of the highest calibre, who knows how just the right push of the
"chorale" speed can elevate a chorus, or how just a little bit of percussion
can subdue a verse...Damn The Torpedos is a great place to hear him in his
Hammond glory)
Melvin Seals (I'm not that familiar with Melvin's other work, but he is a
gospel Hammond monster as evidenced on the Jerry Garcia Band Live)
Will Bernard (great b3 player: check out Medicine Hat).
Regardless of the style or styles you want to play, each of these guys has
some things you'll want to absorb.

Guys and gals, I've been reading this list for a couple months. It's been
enlightening.
Concurrently, I've been going on a "B-3 & assorted organ soul-jazz" CD
buying binge.
Between stuff I knew already, and passing references in posts on this
list, I've been
building a list of players worth listening to because
a) I enjoy the sound; and
b) hope that my subconscious will assimilate 1/100th of the licks and
I'll become a more
interesting player myself.
Anyhow, I can tell from the posts you all have listened to more than I,
and have your
favorite players. I am looking for names to add to my list of organ
players or groups with a
strong organ presence in them. It's short--and given below.
What I want is recommendations from the list of need-to-hear players that
are missing,
and I'll check them out as my CD-buying allowance gets replenished. Please
if someone
disagrees with my opinion or someone else's opinion of "what's worth
listening to," hold
your tongue. I don't want a flame war or a discussion that extends for
more than a day or
two on this list wasting the time of the players "beyond this basic stuff"
who are trying to
rewire their pedals and such, I just want to build my list. Every single
CD I've bought that I
picked up because someone mentioned the player on this list has been
killer so far. I want
more!!!
Thanks for your time.
My list--who's missing?
DeFrancesco, Joey
Earl, Ronnie (just the years Bruce Katz was in the Broadcasters)
Holmes, Richard "Groove"
Jones, Booker T
Katz, Bruce
Levy, Ron
McGriff, Jimmy
Monaco, Tony
Smith, Jimmy
Walker, Jr. & the All-Stars
Extra Credit: What are your favorite multi-artist B-3 boxed sets? Is there
such a thing?
