Subject:Yamaha FC7

Sorry to beat a dead horse....but
based on the list's advice I bought a used FC7 pedal to use with my VK77.
To invert the polarity I got a stereo headphone extension cord, cut
it and inverted ring and sleeve.
it still doesn't work properly, having only an abrupt change in
volume at half throw.
What am I doing wrong?
The weirdest thing is that I connected it to my Yamaha P120 and it
controls the volume upside down, meaning no sound when I push and
full volume when I lift my foot.
Could it be somehow defective? It looks perfect and barely used
