I was in a band in 1979 that used Galaxy HotSpots as our sole
monitors. We ran all the keyboards, including my bass pedals, through
the PA (I had recently sold my last Hammond and was playing Rhodes
plus Crumar Orchestrator plus Octave Cat plus Crumar pedals, modified
for me by Univox in Garden City, NY). We did not put the bass through
the monitors, since it came across sufficiently through stage
leakage. We played in venues ranging from small bars to large
catering halls.

The HotSpots were always reliable, and gave a clear balanced sound.
The vocals were easy for us to hear since we had the monitors close
to our ears--this was before in-ear monitoring systems were widely
available. At the time, I thought it was the best monitor system
available.

I have not played in a rock band for over twenty years, so I cannot
comment on whether in-ear monitors, or some other system, or better.
But I still have fond memories of the HotSpots and the freedom from
stage amps that our setup gave me.
