Subject:RE: OT: Galaxy HotSpots - anyone using them

Ed,
I've been involved in Galaxy HotSpots (built right here in Rivercity ;-)
since the 70's when they were made of *wood*. I have a couple pair even
today. I even helped out a bit with their current design by showing
Brock Jabara (the owner and designer) how the case angles could be
changed for use as a floor monitor and still retain mic stand
functionality (my little contribution). Used them for decades in
various gigs.

But I don't use them every chance I get ;-)

Given the chance, I would use in-ears or about ANYthing else.
HotSpots are particularly useful if you are the PA provider -- and
that's who buys them more than anyone. They're convenient, versatile,
portable, scalable, and loud. Though they can't be beat for size/punch
bang/buck, their fidelity is tiresome. I use mine for checking mixes
through 'lo-fi' speaks and the occasional gig (not regular gig) where,
like yourself, space is unrealistically limited.

That said, paradoxically, in long-throw situations and especially
outside stages, they seem to do remarkably well. Sort of like those
times that between the wind and the noise, you're sorta *expecting* a
lo-fi condition, they seem to really fill the bill. So in the "loud
bar" setting they might suffice nicely.

Your ears, your decisions. I guarantee they sound much different in use
than in-store. They're nice to have around for the flexibility, but I
wouldn't wanna be tied to JUST having HotSpots.
Hope that, somehow, helps.

L.

Subject: [CWSG] OT: Galaxy HotSpots - anyone using them

Anybody here have any experience with these? I'm especially
interested in the powered version ( PA5X140 or P.A. III ). I've heard
them in music stores but never heard one cranked in a loud bar
setting. Some of the stages we're forced to play on are so small
that even a JBL EON at my feet is still too cramped, and since I
always rely on the main P.A. to get my sound out front I wondered
if these wouldn't be a decent alternative if all I really need
to do is monitor my own playing. Another potential bonus, even
though I send a stereo signal to the mains I often only get to
hear myself in mono, but with a pair of these it looks like a
lightweight solution to enjoy the same stereo mix the audience
is getting.
TIA and sorry about the OT.
