Subject:Re: VK-8/CX-3 -- still on the fence...
I agree/disagree.. agree that everyone hears things differently, but
disagree that the CX3 isn't the best for that early Santana sound.
I play 4-5 early Santana tunes in a classic rock style band and I
love the Korg sound (mine is a Bx3 actually). I think the CX3 is
actually a little brighter, BUT, IMO the mellower/darker sounds
seems to get lost in the live mix, whereas my Korg is right there
where I want it, and for solos, it cuts beautifully!
When it comes to recording, I can understand why the fatter/darker
sound is preferable because it can be EQ'd and brought up in the mix
as required (for recording I will use my real Hammond) but for live
rock situations, I prefer the brightness and clarity of the korg. By
the way, you can warm it up as required, with easy access to tone
controls, and overdrive etc.. the Korg cuts nicely and it has
terrific flexibility with respect to the wide range of Hammond
sounds it can deliver.
Note to the original poster... everyone is telling you that you need
to hear these clones for yourself, and decide on your own what sound
you like. Based on your original post, that may be difficult given
where you are located, but if are really fussy about the "hammond"
sound you want, you really should make arrangements to A/B some of
these clones.
All that said, as I mentioned in my first reply, you need to start
with the question of whether or not you really need a dedicated
organ.. despite the fact that I am very pro Korg myself, if you need
a multi-purpose keyboard the Korg is not for you... and the
difference between the VK series and CX series, and likely the Xk3
as well, may just be a matter of personal taste anyway, they're all
pretty good clones.
