Jake,

From my experience, 25 years a professional musician, I find that
headphones
are good for practicing but do not use to do any programming of sounds or
setups using them. No matter how much you pay for them. Have you ever
heard that when mixing down a track in a studio you never mix with
headphones?? Only check once in a while for a reference. Reason being
that the sound you hear in the headphones is very deceiving. If you are
programming for live use, use the amp or pa that you will be using for
the gig. EQ's and levels are all different depending on the amplifier and
the speakers that you are using. For example, I have different pianos
for just my combo amp, plug in the pa, etc.
they all sound different.

After reading up on both suggestions, I wound up ordering a set of
AKG K-240DF headphones from Samedaymusic on sale with free 2-day
shipping for $140. They're 600 ohms impedance, so some reviews said
they need an earphone amplifier. I use an old Mackie 1202 mixer with
my home gear that's got enough juice to blow your head off. With my
current earphones getting too loud at 9 o'clock position, I figure
the AKG's will work out okay. Thanx for the tips. Walter
