Subject:Re: OT: selling stuff on ebay - return policy and reserve price
Barry is right on, as I stated in my earlier post. As to the UPS/shipping damage thing, I have shipped probably 30 keyboards, but I bought a mint Clav E7 that was destroyed courtesy of UPS and I got screwed (seller was from Canada, and blahblahblah). UPS also killed the Clavinet I sold on ebay; FedEX ruined a perfectly good Wurli 200A. Keep in mind that UPS reimburses the shipper, not the shippee. To safeguard against any problems, I take the keyboard in its case to the UPS Store and have THEM pack the case which holds the keyboard. It costs extra, but they have no recourse when they screw up: they packed it, they shipped it, they ruined it, they pay for it: No Questions Asked. And yes, something was damaged they packed, and they paid me promptly, in less than 10 days. I overinsure everything I ship (a winning bid of $850 gets insured for $1400), and if it gets ruined, we both win! Also, they ask you if you are shipping an ebay auction...if you are honest and say yes, they
will only insure for the winning price, (and won't add the cost of shipping or packing) so while I would never advocate lying, I would use discretion!

I always use a reserve and set it for the lowest I would want to sell the thing for - which is usually the average going price for whatever I'm selling. I also start the bidding really low ($25.00 maybe) - that gets people bidding early and once they are in, they seem more invested in winning the thing. I've had good luck with this approach and everything I've sold has gone well over the reserve I set.
I would never want anyone to return something like a Clavinet - that just doubles the chances it will get ruined while being shipped. BTW, I've always used UPS and nothing has ever gotten damaged (so far...).

Subject: [CWSG] OT: selling stuff on ebay - return policy and reserve price
Hi,
I recently listed a keyboard on ebay and one of the questions when you are setting up the
auction is "what is your return policy?" Evidently people are more apt to bid if there is a
return policy. Has anyone used a return policy with stuff they've sold on ebay? It seems
complicated for an individual seller.
The other question is whether to have a reserve price or just list the item at the lowest
price you will take (which is basically the reserve). Have people had better luck listing
with no reserve? I started at $800 with a reserve of $900 but maybe I just should have
started at $900.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Joe
