Subject:Re: OT: Up All Night

Well, we enjoy what we do, the people seem to enjoy it...plus since we do original music, our singer likes to tell little stories about where the songs come from. Most of our shows run from 90mins to 2 hours. But the other night we had a pedal steel player and fiddle with us so we took advantage!

Two and a half hour set!! Here in the northeast, the only way to get
musicians to play that long without a break is to pay them a lot of
money.
Any set that is longer than an hour is too long. First of all, the
musicians
are reaching the point of diminised returns. Arms get sore, wrists get
tight and ass cheaks get numb for us drummers and piano players. It also
helps to clear the mind to have a 20 minute break. Lastly, people do
need to use the bathroom on reguler basis.

I need a break,

I see what you're saying, but our experience is different. Tonite for
example, our opener went on about 9pm-10:20, and we went on at 10:45, and
played straight through 1:30. We had about 780 people there (it was
packed thankfully), and they were trying to shoo them out of there before
2am. Typically when we play folks stay until the end of the night.
Maybe it's the circuit we're on, but playing original music, our audience
tends to be a younger crowd (21-35), and they really don't come out until
after 10p. We never know if we have an opener until we get to the club,
but certain clubs like tonite, it's a given because of the size of the
room (club hopes opener will bring a few more people).
An earlier start for me would great.

Oh, man, that reminds me; my old band used to play this bar that was open
til 4am. So we would always try to get them to let us finish by 1:15 so
we could get the PA packed up and our gear out because at precise 2:10am,
you couldn't move in there because all the young drunks would be coming
from the 2am bars, and of course they would already be drunk on their
butts. It never worked out that way though...people would scream for
another one, and you'd want to oblige!

When my band plays out, we start at 930, repetoire is classic rock and
obscure TV themes, demographics are over 35. Crowd is thin at 1200.
If we started earlier, like 900, the load out would be less taxing. 3
against one on the change.
