Bill,
I would also suggest downloading to a sequencer, but... It is possible
to keep the patches in the system. A friend of mine, who is excellent at
soldering, (actually does it for NASA), helped me change my battery. If you
use another battery and create a "jumper" to the power line on the circuit
boards, you can in essence have two batteries hooked up at the same time.
After you have the "jumper" battery installed, you then change the battery
that is permanently hooked into the DX7. Then after you put in the new
battery, you then remove the "jumper" battery. It worked perfectly in my
DX7, but obviously you would want to back up the patches, just to be safe.
A warning though, if you aren't great at soldering though, I don't know if
you would want to try, as you can fry the circuit board. When he was
working on my DX, the only thing that I contributed to the process was
ordering the pizza.
Mike

I think almost any sequencer these days can record and store a program dump
from a synthesizer.
I have one of the first DX-7's, and its battery is still fine (of course
that could change tomorrow...)

Has anyone ever changed the battery in a DX7II before? I have gotten
the change battery prompt a couple of times, but I don't want to lose
the sound patches. I don't have a cartridge for it, so if I lose the
sounds, I'm kind of screwed.
