What? The VK8 doesn't have a transpose feature? Really? What a massive oversight! I thought every professional keyboard from the DX-7 on had that feature!
I play in the gospel band in church and 1. every song is in D flat to begin with and 2. every song gets transposed up a half step a few times before it is over...
Call me lazy, but I wouldn't want to do it without the transpose feature!

Subject: [CWSG] XK3/ VK8/ V5+ ....two boob's worth
I would welcome the opportunity to A/B/C these clones at a shootout
somewhere. In fact I got close to it in Seattle this weekend at the Guitar Center .
They had an XK3, A Roland VK8 and a Korg CX3 all in a row ! It was the first
time I had encountered this and my impressions were my opinion only of
course. Comparisons were done through headphones only.....................
1. Korg CX3. To me the chorus vibrato is not quite convincing.
It didn't get very far due to that.
2. Roland VK8 - good to great C-3 chorus vibrato ( my favorite of the
three). Nice overdrive effect. Key click not obtrusive. Full organ was also not
offensve or overly digital sounding . NO EDIT SCREEN - a sad oversite for such
a good sounding clone. How in the hell are you supposed to transpose some
hard jazz changes if you are working behind a vocalist? I am not THAT far
advanced....... transpose for one is such a huge advantage with any other
clone. Also the keyboard tends to double trigger unless you play with superhuman
accuracy.
3. XK3 - with this I would say its big advantage is the
overall warmth of the sound. However, it had the most keyclick of any of the three
clones. Also , the chorus vibrato did not fool me into thinking I was playing
a real Hammond..... when I got to the top octave, the vibrato seemed a bit
strong and I would probably not be convinced that I was hearing the real deal
on a recording. This is what has kept me from purchasing an XK3..... that's a
lot of money not to get the C/V right. Admittedly, it has a much better
interface than the screenless VK8. The sound seemed pehaps a bit thicker than
the Roland , which could be an EQ issue.
4. What was missing was of course a real console and the new Voce V5 plus
or Key 5. The Voce clones are rare but I am holding out on doing any
"upgrades" ( I still have a VK7 ) until I at least hear the Voce. To my knowlege
there are none in the Pacific Northwest and I prefer to test them without
financial committment. If Voce finally nails the percussion and chours vib more
accurately than the XK3 it could be a winner. But so few of us have ever seen
one...... hopefully that will change.
For now I have used the money that would have been spent on a clone
and just bought another console ( A 105, which is basically a C-3 with
speakers) . I am still a holdout on the 21st century selection of clones.
Hopefully some of the manufacturers will realize there is still work to do......
