Subject:Re: Hammond XK-3...my two bobs worth.

The V5 is a fabulous instrument with that infamous growl...VERY beefy. I owned one for quite a while and really liked it, especially for smaller rigs where I only wanted one keyboard to control everything. Through a leslie it was great. Of course there's more to the Hammond sound than just the beefy growl (although that is VERY important). What the V5 did NOT do well was percussion (not so beefy, not that familiar woody thunk, but with the percussion mod was better, but still not quite there); chorus/vibrato (didn't do that at all...what it did do was something...well, it did something, but not something I was looking for); the overdrive control was useless and the leakage was the most insane thing I ever heard. It also could not replicate the sound of the Hammond motors being turned off in mid-play, and then being restarted (granted, an effect most people won't want, but something that a lot of rock guys dig).

Had I auditioned the V5 in a store under the conditions you heard the XK3, I would have laughed my butt off: where's the leslie sim? You call this chorus c3? This is percussion? But, I had one shipped to my house and spent some time with it, and found it was a really great little box...in fact, a killer clone module for less than $700. The Electro was the same way...in the store, not so impressive, but at home, when you can tweak it, you can make it a very personal sounding machine.

The XK3 has that beefy sound of the legendary B3. It has the impressively beefy thunk of the Hammond percussion (oh yeah!). It has a very good chorus/vib generator that actually sounds right, especially when you back it off a little. It even has the goofy motors dying and being restarted.

It's a great machine that can be highly personalized to fit your style and needs, and can sound like totally different organs in the hands and ears of any player. That's the sign of a great instrument.

But play what makes you happy!

Well 2 nights before I've just play a well maintained oil greased down B3 and
it really kicks and judging with the V5 it comes really close to it. I guess
I've grown accustom to that particular sound and that the V5
.................no need to repeat myself. Of course this is my opinion. Different strokes for
different folks. MikeW.
