I've been playing an XK-3 with a lower manual and pedals since June
and have not had a problem. It seems that what is happening is that
you have the XK-3 set for MIDI inputs one and two and not for MIDI
in 1 as pedals and MIDI in 2 as lower manual (see pg. 86 in the
manual). If this is the case, then probably what is happening is
that although you have a manual attached, you are actually playing
only the upper manual on both ie: the XK-3 manual is sending on
channel 1 and the attached manual is also sending on channel 1. So
when you play a note on the XK-3 and hold it, and then play the same
note on the lower manual and release it you are turning that note
off.

This seems to be the problem you are describing.

See pg. 86. If the XK-3 is set for MIDI inputs 1 and 2, the channel
that you send lower manual info. on matters if you have it set for
lower man. and pedal, it doesn't. When the XK-3 is set for MIDI/In
as lower/pedal, whatever is attached to MIDI in 2 plays the lower
manual no matter what channel it is sending on. If you have it set
for In1/In2 then what channel it receives info on is important since
the normal setting is Upper: ch-1. Lower: ch-2 and Pedals: ch-3. You
could have three separate keyboards attached to the XK-3 through a
merge box on MIDI in 1 and play all three manuals as long as each
was transmitting on the channel the XK-3 was expecting.

When you turn a keyboard off and hold down a note and turn the
keyboard on, you are not sending a note on message, so the XK-3
doesn't know to turn a note on.

I think you somehow got the MIDI settings changed and that caused
your problem.
