Sorry to disagree with Jon himself, but ring mod does not equal
distortion in the usually accepted sense. It's a special effect that
creates nonharmonic partials. When you hear it you'll know what I
mean. Those of us with Nord Electros have one built in. It creates
fairly nasty tuned metallic sounds that don't work well for chordal work.

In other words, it's a cool extra effect but you still need something
else to give you that musically useful grind.

What most people think of as Jon's distorted sound comes from the
Machine Head period where he had quit playing through Leslies, and was
running through Marshall stacks. Pretty simple really!
