Subject:Re: XK-3 with Speakeasy or not (was: Help mail ordering an XK-3)
Depending on the efficacy of the tube circuit, you'll get results of varying intensities. The advantage of the Speakeasy over just tubes, or other preamps, is the tone shaping circuitry. However, BEWARE!!! The Speakeasy is like crack: once you take that first hit, you won't want to leave the house without it.

Why not just try different tubes in the XK-3? You can buy a lot of
tubes for $600 - $900. Different vintages/brands provide different
tones/benefits. New Sovteks 12AX7LPS's give more overdrive, old GE
12AX7a's give maybe a little less overdrive but don't have a low
frequency drop off, other's probably have subtle differences. Be
