Yeah, it would seem that GEM is hurting themselves severely by such inattention to fixups.
But, also it may be that with the display thing there may be someplace else that can indeed come up with a fix for the screen. It probably is not as easy a fix as for example brightening a screen on an old MKS20, which I believe is doable at $50 or so but I don't offhand no where.

BTW if you do pursue this and succeed let me know- I also have one with the unreadable screen and great sound!

Someone has suggested memorizing the program order!
