Subject:Re: Why did Hammond get the virtual B3 right?
In the XK-3. Remove the four screws across the back and the four
smaller headed screws across the front just below the top cover. The
wood top is mounted to a metal frame, the screws go through the
front and back of the XK-3 and into threaded holes in that frame. It
may be a snug fit so it may take a little pressure to get the top
back in place. The tubes are plugged into sockets that are mounted
on a PC board. The tubes are held into the sockets by metal clips
that fit over the tops. Be careful pressing the tubes back into the
sockets. The pc bd. flexes down when pressed on, but there is room
in there to get a finger under the edge of the board to support it.
There are two small pots on the bd. I think one is market something
like VR-1 & High Freq. Gain. and the other is just marked VR-2. I
don't know anything about the Speakeasy preamps. I have used a Tube
Works Blue Tube II with my XM-1, but it seemed to take away more
than it added to the sound of the XK-3. I seemed to lose some of the
low end with it in the effects loop.
