Subject:Re: Why did Hammond get the virtual B3 right?
Try these tubes where, in my leslie or in the XK3? I actually have old GEs in my leslie, and I just replaced them this weekend with a pair of Sylvanias (?...I can't remember, they were in a special foam insert in my case that I put together 7 years ago...this is the first time I've changed those tubes! even though I have checked the bias every year). I'm pretty damn happy with the sound of the XK3/Speakeasy/leslie combo.
Which reminds me....isn't the Speakeasy basically an A028 preamp?

If you are an adventurous soul, find a pair of old 12AX7A tubes from
the 50's or 60's era like Raytheon or GE and try them. I think the
new tubes like Sovtek or Ei (these are what came in my XK-3) from
Yugoslavia seem to be brighter than the older tubes. I tried a pair
of Sovtek 12AX7LPS tubes, and they "overdrove" sooner than the Ei
and sounded more like a guitar distortion to me. The Raytheon tubes
I have in it now might not overdrive as much, but they don't seem to
lose any / as much of the lower frequencies. It sounds to me like
there is more organ in the overdiven sound.
