Subject:Re: Why did Hammond get the virtual B3 right?
If I understand what they call their 'long loop' technology, I am going to guess (and this is a guess) that each of the 'virtual tone wheels' is actually a digital sample (with a long loop as opposed to a single cycle loop) of the sound that particular wheel would produce. I am guessing that each of these looped samples plays over and over again constantly, just like the wheels on a real B3. When a certain combination of keys and drawbars is activated, the appropriate sounds from the samples are accessed, just like the appropriate sounds from the wheels were accessed in the old days.
I think (and this is another guess) most (if not all) of the other current clones use mathematic digital models of the Hammond tone-wheel mechanism to create the sound. This might account for the differences.
And, Yamaha and Roland and the others make most of their money from selling workstation type synthesizers - organs are strictly a sideline. As far as I know Hammond pretty much just makes organs, and their chief competitor is themselves 30 years ago! If they want people to buy new Hammonds as opposed to old Hammonds, the new ones better sound just as good if not better!

For a long time, many manufacturers have been using myriad technological
resources trying to duplicate the sound of the original B3 and tone wheels as
accurately as possible. Now, all the reviews I read point to the new B3P -- with
"virtual tone wheel" technology -- as the very best, some going so far to say
that it's indistinguishable. What I don't understand is what Hammond was able
to do technologically in replicating the B3 so accurately that so many others
couldn't? And why Hammond, and not Korg or Roland or Yamaha?
