Subject:Re: Hammond XK-3 Questions
I can't opine on the Speakeasy preamp, but I have an old Tube Works
Blue Tube II, and 2 old Blue Tube pedals. To my ears, they do not
add anything to the sound of the XK-3. They did help / warm up a
Hammond XM-1 module as well as an old Yamaha SK-20 and other synth
organ sounds that I've used. On the XK-3 they seem to take away more
than they add. I have tried other tubes in my XK-3 and they changed
the sound some. Sovtek 12AX7LPS's seem to start overdriving sooner
and "scream" more. I tried an old (50's era) pair or Raytheon
12AX7's and they seemed to not overdrive quite so quickly or as
much. They also seemed to not lose as much of the mid range
frequencies. I may put the Raytheons back in or try others soon, I'm
using the Raytheons in a spring reverb because they don't drive the
springs as hard as the Sovteks that came with it.
