I really learned to play the organ (as a Jr. High kid back in the '60's) by listening to a few records with great organ playing on it. Booker T (especially 'Hang 'em High') was a great influence. That one song has just about every Hammond organ sound and Leslie effect crammed into about 3 minutes. I still have that 45 single - it is pretty worn out! Highly recommended! I listened to lots of Sly stuff, some Billy Preston some Jimmy Smith. I remember the live Vanilla Fudge record has tons of Hammond tricks and effects on it. Of course I couldn't afford or move a Hammond back then, so I learned this stuff on a few combo organs and a Fender Vibratone Leslie. Boy, I would of killed for a 'Clonewheel 'Wanna B' back then...

I am a newbie to B3 playing in general. I have played keyboards for
years and always drooled over the guys I know that can jam out B3. I
just didn't have the option of getting a big rig like that. Now with
the clones coming out that are actually getting half decent...I am
ready to learn everything I can about playing the B3 and trying to
learn to rip..
I have read through a bunch of posts and I have read the keyboard mag
review already. I'm sure many opinions persist, and the bottom line
is I need to try to find these clones to play and hear myself. But
given the following criteria, I'm leaning towards the XK3 being the
one I probably want. Would love to hear other's opinions:
Seems like the primary contenders are XK3, VK8, Nord or possibly some
kind of laptop setup with NI B4.
1 - I want to learn how to control a real B3. How to use the
drawbars, work the leslie, work the volume pedal, etc. Basically if
I ever get the opportunity to own or play a real organ some day..then
I want to be at home...in terms of feel of the keys, using all the
controls, etc..
2 - Most likely I am not going to get a Leslie cab at this point in
time. Perhaps down the road if I get really into it. But for now I
gotta make use of built in sims. I will definitely be gigging with
this keyboard, primarily doing rock and some funk, blues, R&B type
stuff. Not church or gospel or hard core jazz. Will nearly always
be in a rock setting.
3 - It may be a long time before I try to use foot pedals. By the
time I get into that, if ever, there will be new technology out.
4 - I have other keyboards already, weighted piano, modules, etc.. I
don't neccessarily need this keyboard to include other sounds.
5 - I'm not going to buy an extra preamp for this organ either at
this point in time. Perhaps down the road. I might try to use a
Digitech GSP-2101 with it..which is a guitar preamp/FX processor I
have that includes Leslie sim and has a tube in it, with midi
controllable parameter control. But that will be experimental.
Bottom line is that I need the keyboard to stand on its own in terms
of sound, primarily being run direct into a PA or into a typical
keyboard amp.
