I don't see what's not fair about it. A smaller company like BT (known for their customer service) may not be in a position to let you do that, but a larger company like Sweetwater is. One of their selling points is their "30days no questions asked" return policy. They are a service oriented company. If you feel somewhat guilty about doing such a thing, tell them up front about it....unless you feel guilty because you have no intention of actually buying it. Test Driving to me the step you take when you are actually serious about a purchase (after said Test Drive, if you decide you don't like the instrument, there's no harm there). Otherwise, if you're just "checking it out", then yeah, that's a different ballgame altogether, and you shouldn't put any company through that; at the very least you'll be incurring a one-way shipping charge.

I am not offended. I agree, it's not my favorite either. I play 90% of the

You bring up some very good points. The best way to purchase an instrument
is to try it first-hand, on a gig. I was able to do that when I purchased my
VK7 and CX3. But Hammond/Suzuki is no where to be found in Southern
California. Even Mike Kahrs has no idea when he will have an XK3 in stock.
therefore, there are no demos or loaners. So I would have to ask the good
folks at BT, or Goff, or some other mail-order company to test drive one of
their new units? Not fair, if you ask me.

A few points:
The CX-3 setting used in the example is a custom one by David Jacques (and
not even my
favorite of the 4 he made available). I like them all fine; but after
downloading them I have
been further tweaking them to get them to sound better to my ear and tastes
(he has the
"mics" rather far back from the Leslie), and I'm sure that David is not
offended by that.
