Subject:CLONE COMPARISON
Much thanks to Josiah for this brilliant idea. We all have our preferred
clones; here's a chance to see how they actually compare with each other.
But, as others have said, it's really about what one hears when they're
playing/recording/performing with their own clone. When presented with the obvious
differences in all these organs, one can get either disappointed or
disillusioned, then DIS their own clone, WHICH IS NOT GOOD. I get excited when I
"discover" a new tweak-setting for my CX3's "rotary" (no Leslie name here, not on
organ or in manual) function; "Oh, wow, THIS is it... the other 8 million tweaks
I've tried were all just a lead-up to this... it's a real Leslie 122, gone
digital!" Since getting this Version 2 CX3 (November '02), I've enjoyed tweaking
all the settings. It's sort of a personal thing, CREATING your own B3
environment. So when you're presented with samples of other clones, it's a dash of
cold water to the face somehow... "well I've been working these tweaks for so
long... dealt with frustration, felt great satisfaction... and here's this OTHER
clone which 'nailed' it!" The thing to remember is that the clone you bought,
the one you love to play, you chose because for whatever reason it worked for
you, it FELT right. Period - like all else in life, there's always going to
be that which is above & that which is below you... and your clone choices. But
in saying this, when seen strictly as a guide to "what's out there", seen
objectively, this is a really good idea, if for no other reason than to marvel at
how lucky we are, us tonewheel organists, to be alive in this period of such
authentic virtual TW-generating. There are so MANY different virtual B3
applications around... Before the XB2, there was the original CX3 (I don't know
about other early clones, but I know they existed long before the early '90s).
Other than that, what was there, that lousy DX7 patch, some other pathetic synth
"Jazz Organ 1 & 2"-type attempts?
Mine own 2 cents... all the samples Josiah provides sound great. I wish the
CX3 hadn't had its' percussion on; I love the DB setting (808 000 004) that was
used. I use a lot of variations of this gospel-y registration, V/C on and
off... and I would've loved to have been able to compare ALL the organs with that
all-important "...4" being audible. I'm looking forward to visiting this site
when the "jazz" and "rock" applications are ready.
Josiah, thanks again for this great service to all us organ-ized
clonewheelers. Best wishes to all - Adam
