This is true. About 10 years ago, I was on a nationally televised show
playing with my band and was using my Hammond XB-2. During the setup and
check, they had one person on the stage whose sole responsibility was to
walk around the stage with black gaffer tape and cover all the logos. It is
all about the advertisers that are paying for commercials and endorsing the
particular event. In this case, there were numerous Yamaha items that were
in the backline, having been presented to the show by Yamaha. Yamaha was an
endorser and so their name was not covered by black tape. I would expect
Yamaha would have been fairly pissed if Hammond received free advertisement
on nationwide TV, so that's why the black tape was used.
