Onstage, the bulk of the wires going to the PA mixer are
microphones. And microphones have these big XLR balanced ends. When
the mixer is not onstage, but out in the audience area or off to the
side, some method of extending the mic cables must be used.

Enter the Snake. It's a box with a bunch of XLR females, with a
bundle of wires bound together, terminating at the other end in a
bunch of XLR males.. extending each mic.

But what about quarter - inch high impedance inputs? Like from
electronic keyboards..

You use a Direct Input box which converts the signal to balanced low
impedance for that long trip to the mixer.
