Subject:RE: further on clone lust
The thing that gets me though is how good some folks make their clones sound. Listening to the Flower Kings live DVD, and hearing his Hammond tone, I kept waiting to see a shot of the keyboardist to see what he was using. And I was impressed that it was a Nord Electro (and he had a VK7 up there as well that he was using as a controller for his rack...he played the Hammond bits on the lil Red Corvette).
Transatlantic's Live DVD sports great organ tone, and it's just a VK7 (his rack was very small, and didn't look to carry anything but an Akai Sampler triggered from his Alesis QS8.
If you have a sound that inspires you....it makes all the difference. Even to us musicians, if it's in the ballpark, we're more interested in what the music is saying than how it's saying it....although, we can't ignore how its being said can we? :-)

You hit it right on the head. Most listeners in clubs have NO idea how a
Hammond should sound. I have played some house B3's that sound as bad as
DX7's and they still come up and say "Man, that organ sound's incredible!"..
If your rig inspires you to play good music, then that's the rig you need to
be performing with..

The usual counterargument is that even if the hammondesque tone
doesn't matter to the listener, it still matters to the player, who
in turn will play in a more inspired manner, which should, in a
perfect world, make for a better listening experience for the average
audience member. And that's a valid point. .
