You can also thank the Dead for monitors. Not sure if it was Bear, Healey or someone else, but the Dead were the first to use onstage monitors. Also one of the first to use in-ear monitors.

Sometimes but not always. Occasionally dual mikes (oops, I mean mics)
indicate a differential setup for feedback cancellation. The dead
used to do this. You'd have to sing right on top of the mics,
anything with phase differences between the two (like ambient sound)
would be cancelled. Alright, I'm getting geeky.
