I agree with your comments about "#1"...which is why that's a term I don't throw around: It's too subjective. I do try to qualify what I'm comparing the XK3 to (the clones I've owned...not just "tried" or "heard", but actually owned and played and gigged with for substantial amounts of time). And while I do appreciate what you say, the fact is you're comparing apples and oranges....we're comparing apples: a software-based clone is a different animal just by its nature of not being a "standalone" instrument. Now comparing tones as well as the user interface...oh wait, in addition to a laptop/PC, you also need a keyboard too...

Guess the EVB3 ain't part of this particular shootout.

I've also never tried the new VOCE product, and therefore would never
attempt to proclaim what is #1. If I had the opportunity to play
those, and AB against the EVB3(my favorite by far against those I HAVE
played - CX3, Electro, B4, VK7, 77 & 8, and XK2), THEN I would be in a
position to voice an opinion as to "No. 1." And that would still be
just that - one person's opinion. Plus, are we talking with amp sim,
and through which type of amplification, or thru a real Leslie, if so
which kind, for what type of music and what type of registrations.
THEN - best overall doesn't mean that another clone doesn't work a bit
better for this type of music or that type.

I had to rant when I saw "No. 1" because that is a floating criteria,
and also because it would imply that someone has tried ALL the
candidates, and not just the usual suspects! Where I will agree is
that MP3s are at best a preliminary test, and sure not sufficient for
a strong conclusion. They are an intersting test though, nothing
less, and nothing more. My suspicions (based only on audios of the
New B3 and posted reviews on this list) are that it is an marked
improvement over the crop of clones I've played, and that it probably
approaches the EVB3 - maybe/maybe not. I also suspect that the new
VOCE product is up there as well. ASSUMING this, it simply means that
the latest crop of clones (EVB3, XK3, & Key5) have now reached truly
remarkable levels. I believe that the Hammond tonewheel is no longer
a necessary source for that magic tone. Leslie sims are also great,
but aren't there yet.
