Subject:Re: 3 Questions about 1/4 inch cables & Keyboard output strengths
No, brass is definitely different than gold plated. Brass ends tend to corrode. Typically you'll see Guitar Center offer cables for $5 with their imprint. They have brass ends (a very dull bronze/gold color) with rubber casings that don't come off (ie, can't be fixed). Cheap, but not good. Gold plated seems to be okay. I've got them on some of my home audio gear, but I don't use them for my rig.
I have already purged your last email, but if I remember correctly, you're asking about using the L&R of your keyboard into two inputs on your amp even though it's not stereo?
The plus is you'll get more volume. But there is no sonic gain, and if anything, you lose a lil something. Case in point: My Motif 8 has some great Rhodes patches with stereo vibrato/panning things happening. If I'm not going "true" stereo, the effect of that panning is so diminished that it's just an annoying fluctuation in sound. So if I'm not using two amps, then I'll go with one cable. Even though not stereo panning, the vibrato/trem effect is quite present and inspiring.
I'm a stereo kind of guy, but a friend of mine plays in a great band called Mr. Blotto. And I'm always amazed at how great that band and he sound every time I hear them. His B3 is mic'd in mono (upper/lower), and all his pianos and synths are just one cable each. He gets a fabulous full sound everywhere in the room. Every now and then I try it, but I have this weird mental block about being mono.
