The process isn't listed in the VK8 manual, but I found it in the PDF that
came with the download, so here it is for anyone with the VK8 keyboard (not
the VK8m module) :

1. Connect the MIDI Out of the sequencer to the MIDI In of the VK-8
2. While holding down ROTARY FAST/SLOW and ROTARY ON, turn the power on
3. Play back all standard MIDI files in numeric order
Note: The ROTARY ON button¹s LED will flash indicating the MIDI data is
being
received.
4. Once all files have been received, all the LEDs will light up
5. Turn power Off
6. Power On the unit normally to complete the update.
