Subject:Re: XK3 Review
David,
Great review!
Add a MS Pro-145 and have it all!
Two SRM-450s are 2 X 51 lbs = 102 lbs, Stereo, doesn't rotate.
Pro-145 is only 65lbs., it's 360 degrees not stereo, it rotates, and
most of all it sounds great (clean or growling)!
You are right about the Speakeasy. I have played with the tubes
in the XK-3 for hours and hours. I can get some decent sounds, but
no real growling or screaming.
I uses XK-3 -> Speakeasy Classic (thru effect loop) -> Pro-145
One thing is clear: both Speakeasy and MS understand TUBES!
I use the speakeasy to add tube smoothness (actually creaminess and
depth (or phatness). I use the Pro-145 for growling and screaming
and I think that it comes from John Fisher's knowledge of Leslies
and his working to get an amp combination that reproduces the push
of the tube leslies and the other big thing is the frequency
response of the horn and bass speakers (but, mostly the horn). It is
when you push the horn and bass speaker at that special crossover
that you get the leslie sound and if you push them with the RIGHT
tubes you really get the SOUND.
All, this said what is our improvement list for Hammond?
Here is mine:
1. C/V independently controlled for each manual
2. Chorus depth control
3. Lower manual octave 0 to +2 (instead of just +1)
4. Preset lock, so if I accidently hit a preset key during
performing I don't change the preset.
5. A usable preamp - one that growls and screams - not buzzes
(this is an organ, not a guitar)
6. The leslie sim is fine for my needs since I don't use it for
performance or recording - other may want improvements here, but I'm
OK.
Actually, it's not too big of a list. What would others like to add?
