Damon,

I suggest that you do what I used to do when I was playing
music that called for a great deal of Hammond plus other
keyboard and synth sounds. Find a great Hammond clone
(like the CX3 or XK3) and use it for your Hammond sounds
and as a controller to trigger a good rack module for your
other sounds (Like a motif or fantom rack).

You can set up presets on the CX3 that instantly accesses
sounds from your module. Just make sure that you record
that preset with no drawbars out (or with the output on
0). I used the CX3 as a controller and it worked great. I
bet you can do the same with the XK3 (plus it has pitch
and modulation wheels!).

Subject: [CWSG] upgrading from vk7...v-combo, kurzweil,
triton or what?

I am really in a pickle, and could use all the advice I
can get. I have a
keyboard rig ohat consists of a motif es6, an alesis ion,
and a roland vk7.
The vk7 is not cutting it for me in live applications,
mainly due to its
limitations as just an organ clone. I do not really want
to sacrifice my
organ tone, but I do need more from my second keyboard
than just organ. I
am looking at the v-combo, but it seems like it may not
work out for me.
Yes, it keeps the organ tone and interface, and adds piano
and synth tones,
but it seems limitted in that regard and I need something
that is
versatile. While it probably does the organ great and the
acoustic pianos
great, the electric pianos are lacking even compared to my
motif, and the
synth section without expansion boards is limitted and
tith expansions,
sounds may be difficult to find quickly. I was thinking of
doing the
unthinkable and sacrificing a bit of tone for versatility,
so I started
looking at things like Korg Tritons and Trinities and
Kurzweil K2600 or
K2661. I don't know what you all think of the Kb3 mode,
and I know that
Triton organs or trinity organs will pale seriously in
comparison to what I
have now, but I am just trying to make my playing life
simpler and that
second keyboard that deoes great organ but nothing else is
becoming a
limitation when I need something more from my middle tier
keyboard. So, I
turn to you, in the context of a prog rocker who also does
classic rock and
hard rock, what do you all think is the best solution for
me? I really am
stuck and can't figure out what to do. Thanks for any help
you can
lend. P.S. before you say Clavia nord electro, I am
going to pass. The
drawbuttons would not help me due to blindness. I know
you'll say that it
rules out the triton due to the touch screen, but I can
still access the
sounds without touching it and I can also consider the
triton le or karma.
