This has been an interesting thread. There is no doubt that Hammond and his team were excellent engineers. There is also no doubt that the Hammond becoming as popular as it has is somewhat of an accident.

Right there in the middle of the list is "Hammond Organ" 1935. Similar to very many others (and in some ways not even as innovative !).
I especially liked the "Celluphone" (not to be confused with your cellphone !) that reads like it is very similar in principle of operation to the Hammond but used disks with slots that were read with a phototube. The number of slots set the pitch (like the Hammond) but you could change the shape of the slots to vary the harmonic structure. Nifty !.
Anyway this site makes great reading. We owe a debt of gratitude to all of these innovators and engineers.
