Actually, it's the other way around. The Barker doesn't work as well with the internal simulator, because of it's position in the chain. To get the heavily overdriven sound that many players are after, you need a distorted Hammond BEFORE the Leslie. That can't be done with most clones with simulators, because the first point where the sound is available is after the Leslie sim. However, if you're using a Leslie or MS, the Barker + Speakeasy can be placed in the right point in the chain.

There are two Barker models, the standard one, which works with clones that have similar output levels to the Korg CX-3 and Roland CK-7, and the Barker-HG, which was designed around the needs of the Electro, which has a lower output. There's no reason that you cannot use the other model, but your Electro will never get near Steppenwolf distortion levels with a Barker, while your CX-3 will have a very hard time playing squeaky clean through a Barker-HG.
