Subject:Re: How many preamps is too many? (Was Hammond XK-3)

2 preamps is not that unusal, some boards have low output, hence the
need for the Speakeasy Barker mod, which is a signal booster i think.
My Speakeasy does not have the Barker, so i use a preamp in front of
my Speakeasy, when i use it with a CX3 or Hammond X5. I also have an
M102 and believe it or not i use the Speakeasy between this and a
Leslie 760 in order to get a bit more grunt and have more control
over treble.
My guess is that a Speakeasy is still going to find a use with the
XK3, either because the Hammond built in preamp is not usuable ot
because the Speakeasy will give you that little bit of something
extra. If the XK3 tube is based on 12Au7 valve, it shouldnt be too
bad, but if they've gone for the 12AX7 it'll be pretty useless as the
gain will be too hot, unless you like loadsa Jon Lord overdrive.
