Claire...

This is really just a peeing contest. I'm not sure exactly WHY you feel so incensed about this. I have agreed that where portability goes, a clone and/or software solution is the winner hands down. Not having used soft synths, I am willing to agree that as far as tweakability goes, the softworld wins by a TKO. (One of my critiques of the Electro is that it is MOST like the Hammond in terms of tweakability: the one you get is the one you GET!) As for reliability, I think we would both agree that your experience is representative of your world, and my experience is representative of my world; that is to say, your soft-rig has been very reliable for you and many others, but there are quite a few who are suffering to get their soft-rigs to the same level of functionality and reliability, and that my Hammond rigs have been very reliable for me and many others (the fact that 40 years down the road, Hammonds are still being lugged to and from nightclubs, theatres, stadiums and recording
studios attests to that) but others have had to deal with less well-maintained instruments. There is NOTHING worse than the feeling you get when your instrument does not work or work correctly.

As for the other matters, I'm not sure how you can say the "jury is out" because you have made up YOUR mind. Tone is a totally subjective thing, so obviously what you think is the cats meow MAY be a dog barking to me (but seeing as you have a Hammond and have obviously played one for many years, I doubt that's the case).

In fact, if we were to agree the jury was "out", there would be no more clones being developed (which in fact there ARE), and nobody would bother developing a better sounding soft-organ (which obviously they are still doing). So on that aspect alone, I can safely say the jury is definitely NOT out.

In the meantime, enjoy your soft rig, and I hope more do it as well. I am looking forward to the day when the soft-world will be idiot-proof enough for ME to use it. I still can't get my Yahoo mail to work right from this computer even though it used to. The thought that I could actually take 2 keyboards (88 weighted, and 76 waterfall...hey, my Electro!) and a laptop with a KILLER virtual organ that can be tweaked from Booker T mellow to Jon "my leslie's on fire!" Lord, as well as a gorgeous sounding Bosendorfer/Steinway/Yamaha C3 virtual piano, and an "end of the world" Modular Moog/CS80 virtual synth appeals to me like you wouldn't believe. But while not a techno-phobe, I am one of those people whose aura tends to make computers do Bermuda-Triangle-type things.

Woof woof!!!!
