David,
Does the hum occur when you are running the Compaq on its batteries,
as opposed to being plugged in? If not, this could indicate that it
is 'power-supply related'.
Not recommended as a permanent fix, try using a 'ground lift' (three-
prong adaptor without the wire attached) on your Compaq and/or your
monitor(s) to better isolate the source of the noise
From reading a lot of computor/sound forums and my own experience
with my Compaq laptop, the sound chipsets in laptops generally leave
a lot to be desired as far as fidelity and freedom from 'noise'.
I recently got an Echo Indigo soundcard that goes in the 'PC-
slot'that cured my sound-woes. It's ultimately quiet and takes
minimal external space.
