Subject:Re: How do solid state leslies sound?

I think gear can be a bit like stamp collecting at times. Sure the
tube models probably do sound better, but they have that legendary
status that tends to pull the wool over the ears of people at times.
Maybe I'll get grilled by other members for saying so! Before I
picked up the 330, I was thinking that I'd definetely need a tube
preamp for it as I've gigged with other transistor ones and diddn't
like the sound. But having played it for a few days, I love the
sound. I live in Sydney and the cost of importing a Speakeasy is
prohibitive (about $1000AUD).

For example, are you familiar with the Jimmy Smith album "Root
Down" ? This is a live album from the early 70's. On the cover you
can clearly see Jimmy used a Leslie 910, which is transistor model.
And it sounds good (although it's not one of my favourite albums).
And I'll be honest in saying that the sound is different to his Blue
Note Albums like "Crazy Baby", when he would have used a valve model.

I'll also admit I'm relatively new to all this, and my 330 is the
first Leslie I've owned. I've played through a few tube models and
maybe one day I'll get the chance to A/B them.

Hope this answers your question
