I have had the Machine Head Live 72 for some time (on Laser Disk). It's
great, but in black and white and mono.

Subject: [CWSG] Jon Lord DVDs
Hey guys...
I just got a couple DVDs over the weekend I thought I'd share with you. One
is "Jon Lord with Pictures," and the other is "Jon Lord w The Hootchie
Coochie Men;" I also picked up "Deep Purple: Masters From The Vaults."
"Jon Lord w Pictures" is an interview-based piece with Lord (and a couple
non-Purple guys) discussing mainly his orchestral work and his post-Purple
career. There are little snippets of performances, but this is mainly for
hardcore fans only. (disappointing) The DVD focuses primarly on the
revisiting of his "Gemini Suite" with Purple, and with the Queensland
(Australia) Orchestra after Purple. He was to perform on piano with the
orchestra, but ended up damaging his left thumb which led to....
"Hoochie Coochie Men" is Jon Lord with an Australian blues band (with Bob
Daisley on bass...formerly of Ozzy and Rainbow). The band is very good, but
very straightahead blues. When Lord damaged his hand, he felt incapable of
performing on piano, but decided to play with this blues band on Hammond
instead. His tone is tamed down, but still growls a little bit. His blues
chops are pretty good, but the dvd is not going to be revelatory or
anything. It's just a refreshing new look at a world class player. It is
cool watching him out of his element, and yet still asserting his basic
style. This is definitely worth watching.
"Masters From The Vaults" is the real treasure here. It's all live TV
footage from various shows, and it is REALLY good. There's great footage of
Jon Lord tearing it up, and great visuals of Lord doing his patented "wow"
slide...(basically 008000000, and one palm doing a VERY quick up and down on
the keyboard). Bell bottoms and tourqoise jewelry are an option of course!
And while we're on the topic of Hammond organ music, I took my kids to go
see The Perfect Score over the weekend. "Score" is a movie about some teens
stealing the SAT test. There is some great Hammond organ in the soundtrack.
And yesterday my wife and I were watching "Get Shorty" and of course if
you've seen the movie you know, but if not, the soundtrack to that movie is
rife with fantastic Hammond organ work, from Booker T & The Mgs, as well as
some other music by John Lurie & The Lounge Lizards (I think the Lounge
Lizards...but I might be wrong!).
I do have one more DVD expected in the next few days, Deep Purple Machine
Head Tour 1972 (not the "making of" dvd that's been out for a while). I'll
let you know if that's any good. Does anybody here have any knowledge of
the KEYBOARD WIZARDS dvd that's available? It supposedly has some Lord, Ken
Hensley, Geoff Downes, Rick Wakeman and other keyboard players, hopefully in
live settings, but I can't get enough info on that to know.
Happy Daze!
