Subject:Impression of the XK-3
This is a copy of something I posted on the Keyboard Mag. forum:
This may sound kind of corny, but a few days ago I was just kind of
messing around with the XK-3. More changing drawbars, adjusting
overdrive and doing palm wipes to a chord while hitting the fast
switch and stuff like that. I realized today why I was enjoying that
so much.
In the past, I was making adjustments to, or adding a preamp to,
synths or my XM-1, or trying a different Leslie sim. device or
something else in the hope of getting it to sound more like a B3.
What I realized today is that what I was thinking the other day was
that if I ever buy a B3, I hope it sounds as good as my XK-3. There
has not been a time when I have tried something ie: drawbar setting,
overdrive adjustment, or some other option, where I have
thought "man, I wish".
When I tried different tubes, it wasn't to add/fix something that
wasn't there, it was just to see if it would sound different. And it
did, and I like the difference. Same with the spring reverb. I like
the way it puts more "air" around the sound than the digital plate
reverb does (I still use the other reverb settings occasionally). It
doesn't necessarily make it sound "better", in a way that repairs a
deficiency, just more to my liking.
YMMV
