And at the same time they gate the stuffing out of the drums so that they don't sound
worth a darn. I actually prefer to see the soundman work with the drums first - lets me
know what to expect. If the soundman gates the drums, or complains about the lack of a
hole in the drummer's kick drum, then I know he sucks. If the soundman complains about
the drums ringing too much, he sucks. If the soundman doesn't use overheads, chances
are, he sucks. Face it, while we may never end up in the PA, at least when we do make it
in there the soundman doesn't generally jack with our tone. Drummers, on the other
hand, seem to have no choice but to leave their tone solely to the discretion of the
soundman. Pathetic really. While the soundman should strive to make things sound the
best they can, his first responsibility should be to the musician's tone, not to his own
personal tastes.
