Dave can attest to that better than I, but I suspect this was one of those....um....hip hop rock mixes that you speak of.

Why do soundmen think that basing the mix around the drums is musical????? You should mix around the featured element; if it's a vocal band, you mix around the vocals; if it's Buddy Rich, well then you mix around Buddy Rich. But like all things rock, it seems like the idiot factor is the status quo in the business, and the really talented guys get out and do something a little more...involved.
