Did you have the XK-3 plugged into a power surge protected ac
outlet/strip? Any storms your way? A power surge caused by an
electrical storm would be the most likely candidate. Secondly, it
could have been a tantalum capacitor installed the wrong way
round - I have seen those start fires on printed circuit boards!

Anyway, sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope HS come through
and fix/replace it for you. Good luck.
