2 years ago, the night before we left for Japan, we did a huge show at the Park West here in Chicago (about 1000 people). It was our first overseas trip and we were hosting
our own bon voyage party. And since we were going to Japan, we decided we would put together a Japanese-themed medley. (One of the guys had also made a 10 minute intro video featuring bad Godzilla clips and some martial arts movies and redubbed the voices -in an appropriately bad, out-of-sync style- and told the tale of of our expected journeys...it was hilarious!)
ANYWAY....this medley was really fun. In my band, synthesizers and ESPECIALLY string patches are a no-no. Yet, my job was to faithfully reproduce the entire intro section of Mr. Roboto: the Arp String Ensemble sounds, the Taurus bass pedals, the filter sweeps, the vocoder, the synth brass...all of it! At that time, I still had my XV88, and with that one machine, I was able to reproduce the entire piece (thank god for the Vintage Synth card!) We played through that whole piece up to and including the first verse, chorus and B section and people went totally nutz!!! ("I wanna thank you......thank you....I wanna thank you.....And I have to say, as much as I despised that record (I think they were just doing waaaaaay too much blow at that point, and when I said that to their producer, he laughed heartily but did nothing to dispel that notion one way or the other) that piece of music was a ton of fun to play.
What else was in that medley? It went from Mr. Roboto, into Godzilla by B.O.C., then into a real country version of I'm Turning Japanese by the Vapors, and into a balls out version of My Woman From Tokyo.
Yeah, dorky as hell to listen to, but fun as hell to play.

We got a call a couple months ago from Paramount looking for a 'Styx Cover band' for a bar scene in an upcoming movie. Of course, the song they wanted was "Mr. Roboto" - done as close to the original as possible.
I couldn't bring myself to go out and buy a vocoder, much less to actually sit and learn that horrendous rock-opera. ;)
