Subject:Korg CX3 and Nord Electro and Speakeasy
Dear folks,
Here is my cautionary tale about amps in the form of a report on the CX3,
Nord Electro, and Speakeasy. The punchline is that I'm back on the CX3 for
jazz trio (and using the Electro just for gigs requiring piano and organ both).
What follows are questions and then my report that led me to these
questions.
QUESTION 1: I need a not-shrill amp and speaker (or combo) for the CX3 that
can handle the input of a cranked Speakeasy. Keep in mind the EON G2 gave
me problems (see below), so things in the EON class may not do. Any
suggestions?
QUESTION 2: I'm running CX3 version 1--the chorus seems good on version 1;
should I switch to version 2?
QUESTION 3: If someone can help me understand how to tweak the no-Leslie
Electro, I'd appreciate it. Right now, I can't get it to sound right with jazz
no-Leslie settings, so I'm going back to the CX3.
WHY I FIRST SWITCHED FROM CX3 TO NORD:
The CX3 through my EONG2 system was thin both on top and with the basslines
(though clean volume was abundant). It was shrill when loud. I couldn't
use the CX3 plus Speakeasy with the Speakeasy gain cranked with the EON G2
without getting input-overdrive crackle.
I bought the Nord. The Nord sounded good through the EON with Leslie-on
settings right out of the box from top to bottom. I switched to the Nord.
CX3 THROUGH A "LOW FI" SPEAKER:
I was shocked to discover that when I retired my CX3 to my home practice amp
with a low-fi speaker (Carvin 15 plus horn with 1000 watt Stewart power amp),
it sounded much better than it did through the EONS! The CX3 was smooth from
bottom to top, with a natural boost in the low mids and bass that took care
of the basslines. I'd like to use the CX3 with a cranked Speakeasy, but I
need an amp that can keep things from getting shrill and thin.
NORD SOUNDS WEIRD ON NO-LESLIE SETTINGS:
To my shock, the CX3 won hands-down over the Electro in a little A/B
comparison I ran with no-Leslie settings. Something about the Electro (at least the
way I have it set) sounds unnatural with no-Leslie. [Disclaimer: Keep in
mind it could be my imbecility at tweaking, and help is welcome.]
