I jumped on the clonewheel bandwagon back in '80 when Korg released the BX-3. Great to carry in comparison the real thing but sounded crappy unless put through a real Leslie. Eventually sold it off after I stopped gigging full time.
After many years of making do on the part-time gigs I finally stumbled upon the Roland VK-8 and jumped at it. But, of course I longed for the second manual. I would love to have the VK-88 if I were gigging full time now. But, alas...
For my money the VK-8's tone and chorusing voicing are just about the best. And, if you can run it through a real Leslie, even a purist such as myself can have a pretty hard time telling the difference. I haven't actually laid hands on an 88 as yet. But, I imagine it must be a great machine.
I remember when the Vk-7 first came out - I said if it only had a decent piano and real 'waterfall' type keys they'd have me. Along came the Vk-8 and I was hooked! If only I could get an upgrade to get a good clavinet voice.
Hopes this helps.
