Subject:Re: Re PA's, A bit OR (Over-Reacting)
Actually OHF....I was responding to the email saying you should be stingy about letting the others plug into YOUR pa.
But as long as my email was misconstrued, I'll try to make myself clearer point by point as I must have deleted the points I was responding to.
"Running a PA is an art" was not a slam on you or anyone else...in fact, none of this email was directed to you at all. Many people think that just because they can hear things wrong with an engineer's mix that that engineer must be incompetent otherwise it wouldn't sound like that, ergo, "if that engineer makes the PA sound like that, obviously I can do a better job." I'll be the first to admit that when I was younger and even less even-tempered than I am now, that was my way of thinking. After a few years at Columbia and mixing other bands I found out I was indeed right, but it took some work to understand that it wouldn't just be a matter of turning that fader up and this fader down. Again, this wasn't meant as a slam to you (this whole email was addressed to your respondee) or to that respondee at all. Mixing is indeed an art, just like playing keyboards, and skill at one does not necessarily translate to another. In fact, the only proficient musician who happened to know a
lot about engineering that I met or heard was Frank Marino (of Mahogany Rush); I saw his soundcheck at the long gone China Club one night and while getting monitors together, he was able to tell the engineers EXACTLY which frequencies to pull from the mix to get it where he wanted...none of this "less mids, more highs" stuff, he nailed it to actual frequencies. Impressive. Like I said, an art, not unlearnable, but it takes more than just instinct.
"Think there were a lot of questions getting Speakeasy...." wasn't directed at you, or anyone else AT ALL. However, I am guilty of poor syntax, as it should have read "Think there were a lot of questions getting the 3 knobs on the Speakeasy to get optimum tone?" My bad. As for me, I didn't have trouble with the 3 knobs on my Speakeasy, but as a fellow CWSG member, I know you've seen a ton of posts that tend to re-occur with other members trying to get the right combination of knobs for their sound. (Columbia did take care of me, tyvm.) And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with asking those questions; how else does someone learn? I was just saying that if 3 knobs can present a problem (and as keyboardists who have played with amplifiers, drawbar organs, synthesizers and graphic eqs, we all know that 3 is plenty to give us grief at times) imagine what having 24 channels with individual channel eq and sweepable mids can do!!! Again, my intent was not to insult you or anyone else.
The "stingy" comments about letting others plug into the PA you purchase: I guess I must have misconstrued that person's comment as badly as you misconstrued mine.
I didn't recognize tongue in cheek there. My bad again. But I still stand by what I said: That kind of comment, if NOT tongue in cheek, does sound like something a guitarist would say, not a keyboardist, who as we all know, are usually the coolest guys in the band....unless you ask a non-keyboardist.
If you took my email as condescending or insulting, I apologize. But it seems like somebody pissed in somebody's cornflakes today, and it wasnt me. I think you just jumped on the defensive a tad quickly.
Happy Daze....

For Gods sake Tony, Take a chill pill. The PA is for the whole band.
either run it yourself (assuming you have that ability....it IS an art you
know, or we wouldn't even be having this discussion) or find someone who
does.(snip)
Part of me buying the thing IS to learn. Why slam my ability? Who peed in
your Corn Flakes this morning.
(you think there's a lot of questions about getting your Speakeasy/amp/clone
levels?? Lol!),snip
As a matter of fact I had no problem with that. Sorry to hear the three knobs
gave you trouble. Not saying much for "A Columbia student."
The whole "being stingy" thing sounds more like a guitarist POV than a
keyboardist.(snip)
Maybe you should go back to Columbia and take a course in tongue and cheek.
Here's hoping your blood pressure returns to normal soon, OHF Bob
