Carl, this might actually be a key to why you've had hand/finger/wrist trouble with the
Nord where others haven't ( I sympathise, as I have similar problems caused by computer
mouse/keyboard (mis)use).
Here's my thinking: playing organ/light touch keyboards for years you could have
developed "poor" (from a physical point of view) technique that wouldn't have happened
on a heavier piano keyboard. Applying that long-used technique to the Nord's short-
throw, semiweighted keyboard - hitting it hard to get the right sound - could be putting
extreme pressure on nerves/tendons etc.
Because of my injury, I have to be very careful in my technique - keeping wrist and hand
straight and avoiding heavy 'bottoming out' of the keys. I also have to avoid a tendency to
just hit harder when the guitar is drowning me out!
Your new gentle-but-hard approach is what I've switched too as well (thank you Clavia for
adding the velocity curve adjustment). This is encouraged by having tons of amplification
so my playing is as loud as I want without effort.
Good luck with it. And to those of you without hand/wrist/neck/back problems: be aware
these things develop over years. And the doctors say it takes about the same time to
recover. I would urge everyone to have their technique inspected by a suitably qualified
therapist to ensure you're not doing anything with the potential for long-term harm.
Cheers,
David
